Manuel José López López

Mr. López Pérez studied Pharmacy at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he obtained his Degree (1969) and PhD (1972). From 1975 to 1981 he was an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the Pharmacy Faculty of the Complutense University. After an Associate Professorship at the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Alcalá de Henares (1981-1982), he obtained his post as Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Veterinary Science Faculty of Zaragoza University (1982-present).

He carried out his postdoctoral work at the University of Bristol (UK), later undertaking research placements at the Universities of Groningen (the Netherlands) and Lund (Sweden).

At present, his work focuses on the study of human mitochondrial genetic diversity and its physiological and pathological implications. His research figures in 140 published articles, most of them in international journals.

He has been the Rector Magnificus of the University of Zaragoza since 2008.

He exercised his public service vocation in the post of Director General of Higher Education of the Regional Government of Aragón (2001-2003), as a Member of the Advisory Council for Research (CONAI) of the Aragón Regional Government (1985-1991) and through his participation as a Member of Spain’s National Research Assessment Committee (2001-2003).
