José Orihuela Calatayud

Professor of Mathematical Analysis and Guest Professor at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz (Austria), the University College of London, Bordeaux University and the Mathematical Institute of Oxford University, where he was a Fellow of Brasenose College in the academic year 2001-02, Mr. Orihuela has also been Vice-Rector of Curricular and Teaching Staff Planning (1991-1994) and the University of Murcia’s transfer coordinator between the Spanish Government and the Autonomous Community of Murcia (1994-95).

He has accumulated six five-year periods as a professor and five six-year periods in research. He currently participates in around twenty competitive research projects funded by the EU, the Spanish Government and the Autonomous Community of Murcia, as PI and Functional Analysis Group member in many of them. He is a Corresponding Academician of the Spanish Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and a Full Member of the Murcia Region Academy of Sciences.

He has been a guest speaker – the principal guest speaker in most cases – at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, London, Prague, Paris, New York, Vienna, Athens, Vancouver, Sofia and Madrid, among others. He has directed several European Doctoral Theses and one External Thesis at Milan University.

He has been the Rector of the University of Murcia since 20 May 2014. Appointed as an Alternate Member of the High Council of Statistics by the Ministry of the Economy and Competitiveness in 2015, he was later elected as a Regular Council Member of this Institution in 2015. He was appointed Chairman of the Sectoral Committee of the CRUE (Spanish University Rectors’ Conference)/Student Affairs at the Plenary Session of the CRUE’s 2016 General Meeting. In 2016 he has also been appointed as the Representative of the Universities on the Standing Committee, as the First Vice-Chairman of the Spanish University Sports Committee (CEDU).
